Leadership
Mecklenburg is getting ready to kickoff its 2009-2010 year, and they
are looking for participants who are eager to learn more about Mecklenburg County and what it has to offer.
Leadership Mecklenburg is a program designed to bring community,
business leaders, and every day citizens in the area together to
enhance their wisdom and expand their information about what there
is to do in Mecklenburg County as well as the surrounding areas.
Leadership Mecklenburg is open to
anyone who is a county resident or who works in the county.
Participation is limited to 20 individuals, the tuition is $300, and
the application deadline is July 15. The program was
established and designed to foster the development of a pro-active
network of business, political and community leaders in Mecklenburg County. It is a ten-month program
that addresses current issues facing our county. It will
educate participants on county topics and will expand a network of
resources for use as leaders in the community. Contact
Frank Malone at (434) 447-4547 for more

The South Hill Rotary
Club recognized Randy Cash as Rotarian of the year for 2008-2009.
Club President Herbert Farrar selected Cash for his outstanding
service to the Club and always being first to arrive and last to
leave if needed at events. Cash spearheaded the Notebook Project
that placed updated community maps, table tents, lists and phone
numbers in local hotels and restaurants and more in special
notebooks that were placed at local hotels; worked with the
Dictionary/Book Project for South Hill Elementary; attended
Accelerated Reader parties; served as Webmaster; created the “Rotary
Matters” e-newsletter; and had 100% attendance and 100%
participation in all Club activities this year. Lisa Clary

The South Hill Rotary
Club presented its annual Service Above Self Award for 2008-2009 to
Mrs. Lou Saunders, wife of long time Rotarian Dr. Tom Saunders.
Mrs. Saunders was one of the founding members of the CMH Auxiliary
organization in which she has remained active for 55 years by
volunteering and fundraising. She has held practically every
position in the organization including Auxiliary President and has
served under 29 other presidents. She has dedicated over 15,000
hours to CMH and has performed many different tasks including
writing the “Gift Shop How to Handbook.” In 2008 the Lou Saunders
Award of Excellence was presented to Lou for her lasting and
profound contributions to the Auxiliary over the 55 years. In
May 2009, CMH and CMH Auxiliary also dedicated a permanent place of
recognition for Lou Saunders and the Auxiliary in the main lobby of
CMH. Lou Saunders truly defines the Rotary Service above Self award
in the same fashion as The Lou Saunders Award of Excellence which
recognizes those that go above and beyond their duties as a
volunteer. And for Lou Saunders, the 55 years, 15,000 hours of
volunteerism for the CMH Auxiliary epitomizes what Service above
Self is all about in Rotary and the Community. It is the highest
honor a non-Rotarian can receive from the club. Lou Saunders
received her award from Frank Nanney, Service above Self committee
Chairman. Lisa Clary Photo
The South Hill Rotary
Club sponsored their 4-Way Test Essay Contest at Park View Middle
School (PVMS) for the second year in a row and recognized the
winners and the teachers at their May 28 meeting. The entire seventh
grade (190 students) at PVMS was asked to participate as part of an
English project. They had to describe how the four way test of
the Rotary Club applies to their lives at school or at home.
Teachers then screened the essays and presented them to the club
Essay Project Committee (56 this year) which selected three winners
to receive a plaque and a money award for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
This year, three honorable mention certificates will also be
presented during the June 10 awards day. The 4-Way Test Essay
Contest winners for 2009 are: First Place-Matthew Jenkins, son of
Steve and Teresa Jenkins; Second Place-Chelsey Tanner, daughter of
Stoney and Angie Tanner; and Third Place Alyssa Drohan, daughter of
Thomas and Julie Drohan. Congratulations to all the winners and
participants for a job well done. Lisa Clary
