The South Hill Rotary Club will be participating on the International level for a Rotary International Public Relation Award for the 2007-2008 Rotary Year following their selection as the District 7600 nominee for the RI Public Relations Award.  Club PR Director Lisa Clary submitted an application to the district (which is made up of 60 clubs) for consideration and was notified last week, that the South Hill Rotary’s application was selected by District Governor Jim Pierce to be sent forward to RI as the district's nominee for the RI Public Relations Award for the year.  The application had to focus on one of the club's projects, and literacy was chosen to be represented by the Lunch Buddy Program, Accelerated Reader Parties, The 4-Way Tests Essay Contest and Scholarships' presentations. Thanks to the  media support system of The Mecklenburg Sun, The South Hill Enterprise, and The News Progress (who print something almost every week about the  Rotary Club), several websites and links to others, e-newsletters, radio, and other avenues of  letting the public know what the club is doing in the community, the club qualified for this honor.  Clary is pictured with some of the photos and clippings from the papers she has saved to be used to remind the club of just how active they are in the community. Many of them will also be included in packets that will be submitted to the District for consideration for numerous other awards to be handed out on the District level in October.  And of course, a number of them were included in the application that is now District 7600’s nominee for the RI Public Relations Award for Rotary Year 2007-2008. Rotary International will let the district know later in the year as to their selection.  Randy Cash Photo

The South Hill Rotary Club held their awards dinner in June and Tom Smith was named Rotarian of the Year for the 2007-2008 club years. Smith has served as Secretary and Treasurer for many years and is involved in every aspect of the club from behind the scenes to being visible at all events. He handles all the club paper work and money and serves as the liaison for almost everything that goes on in the club with almost every member.   The well deserving Smith (right) was surprised at being chosen and graciously accepted the plaque from club President Tommy Zincone. The South Hill Rotary Club named Doug Hinman the Service above Self winner for the 2007-2008 club years. Hinman runs The Shepard’s Inn and The Shepard’s Shop in South Hill.  It is a Christian entity that operates on donations and sales from the shop only and receives no government funding or grants.  The inn takes in the homeless, transients, separated people with no where to go and those released from prison. Guidelines for those staying are strict as they must undergo drug testing, attend church, daily devotions and work a full time job (all of which is mandatory).  They also provide meals and food to those in need.  Hinman stated that he could not do any of this without the help of the community who supports the program with prayer and gifts. He also thanked his wife Jackie, who is a nurse at CMH and described her “as the backbone to everything” he does, along with the Jesus Christ. “I could not have done any of this without them. I don’t do any of this to get an award; I do it because I love Jesus and love to help people.”   One of the submission applications that nominated Hinman described him as “an angel with an abundance of unconditional love” for those around him.  The Rotary Service Above Self Award was started four years ago and Hinman joins previous winners Robin Allen, Sandra Kinder and Frank Malone as a recipient of the club’s most prestigious award.
